Games
Memory name game:
Materials: Name tags
- Children form a circle and wear their name tags. Let them introduce themselves (name, age, group name, coming from where, first time attending this Regional Gathering?)
- After the introduction, go through their names one more time
Explaining the game to the children:
When it’s your turn, you call a name, go quickly (don’t run) to that person and take up their spot. The person whose name is called needs to call another person’s name, go to that person and take up that person’s spot. You are out (and have to sit down) if your name is called and you are not able to call another person’s name and go to him/her and take up his/her place. (After a few rounds, the coordinator will collect the name tags and the children will keep playing using their memory)
Crab relay game (teams):
Material: Draw a starting and a finishing line (30 to 50 feet apart).
Explaining the game to the children:
All teams line up behind the starting line. I will count (or blow the whistle) to start the race. The 1st person in line will sit down with your back facing the finishing line. You need to put both hands on the ground and stretch your tummy up toward the ceiling/sky. You will crawl that way (like a crab) toward the finishing line and come back to the starting line. You will then touch the 2nd person so that he/she can continue with the race. All of you need to crawl the same way. Whichever team finishes first, wins.
Clothes line-up or Which tail is the longest? (teams)
Material: Draw a starting line
Explaining the game to the children:
All teams line up behind the starting line. I will count (or blow the whistle) to start the game. You will take off your jacket, sweater, T-shirt, socks, shoes, belt, hat, anything that you can take off. You will put all of these items on the floor. Starting from this beginning line, you will make a long tail with your items. One item needs to touch the other; all of them need to be connected (there should not be any hole in the tail). You have 10 minutes to make this tail. Whichever group makes the longest tail, wins.
Remember: You are not allowed to take anything from anywhere else. You can only use the items that you have on your body!
Hint: In order to extend the tail, the children can lie down on the floor, stretching out their legs and arms and stay in touch with the other team members!
Rice bag race (team):
The game is to be played on grass or carpet.
Material: Draw a starting and a finishing line (30 to 50 feet apart). Each team receives an empty big rice bag.
Explaining the game to the children:
All teams line up behind the starting line. I will count (or blow the whistle) to start the race. The first person in line will put their legs inside the empty rice bag, hold on to the rice bag, jump to the finishing line, then jump back to the starting line, and give the rice bag to the next one in line. Whichever team finishes first, wins.
Water race (teams):
The game is to be played outside on grass.
Material:
- 1 sponge and 1 empty water bottle for each team at the starting line
- 1 water bucket at the finishing line
- Draw a starting and a finishing line (30 to 50 feet apart).
Explaining the game to the children:
All teams line up behind the starting line. I will count (or blow the whistle) to start the race. Each team will receive an empty bottle and a dry sponge. Your task is to fill up the bottle with water from this bucket here. Since it is a team effort, everybody needs to be involved, everybody needs to go and fetch the water from the bucket over there, bring back the wet sponge, squeeze out the water into this bottle, and give the sponge to the next person in your team. You are not allowed to take your empty bottle to the bucket and fill it up there. You can fetch water with your empty hands or with this sponge. Whichever team finishes first in filling the bottle with water will win.
Spoon lime race (teams)
Material:
- 1 kumquat for each team
- 1 plastic tea spoon for each child
- Draw a starting and a finishing line (30 to 50 feet apart).
Explaining the game to the children:
All teams line up behind the starting line. Each of you will receive a plastic tea spoon. You need to hold onto the tea spoon with your mouth, meaning you will use your teeth to bite on the long end of the spoon. Both of your arms will be behind your back. You will not touch the spoon nor the kumquat at any time during the game. I will put one kumquat on the spoon of the first child in each team. I will count (or blow the whistle) to start the race. The 1st child with the kumquat on the tea spoon will walk to the finishing line and return back to the starting line. The 1st child will then transfer the kumquat from his spoon to the spoon of the next person in line. Again, no touching with your hands when you transfer the kumquat! The person that drops the kumquat or touches the spoon or the kumquat during the race will have to walk again. All members of the team need to walk once. Whichever team finishes first will win.
